Tobias G. Barry was born in Chicago, April 12, 1924, to Tobias
F. Barry and Mary (Castagnari) Barry. He is a graduate of St. Bede Academy, Peru,
Illinois, and LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College, LaSalle. He received a PH.B from
Marquette University, Milwaukee, in 1949, and a J.D. from Notre Dame University College of
Law in June 1952.
During WWII he served three years with the United States Navy, as a medical corpsman,
in the Pacific Theatre.
Admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1952, Justice Barry practiced law for 22 years until
December 1974 when he assumed the bench.
He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1960 and served until
December 1974, when he resigned to assume the position of an Appellate Judge in the Third
Judicial District. He was retained in 1984 and retired from the bench in 1994.
Justice Barry returned to private practice with the Law Firm of Aplington, Kaufman,
McClintock, Steele, and Barry, Ltd., in LaSalle, IL.
In December 2002 Justice Barry was asked by the Supreme Court to return to the Third
District Appellate Court bench to fill a vacancy for a two year time period.
Justice Barry and his wife Janet, have four children, Tobias Mark, Patrick Alan,
Michele Beth (Barattini), and Daniel Sean.
